Biography

Thomas Kimball I immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Roll of Honor
Thomas Kimball I was KIA during King Philip's War.

Thomas Kimball, born in Rattlesden, Co. Suffolk, Eng., in 1633, came in 1634, with his father, and lived in Ipswich; a mechanic; he owned a mill at Hampton, N. H., in 1653. He followed the trade of his father, a wheelwright.

In 1649 (7th mo.) in Essex Court records is the following:

"We present Joesph Fowler, Thomas Cooke, Thomas Scott, and two of ye sons of Richard Kimball, for goeing into ye woods, shouting and singing, taking fire and liquors with them, all being at unseasonable time in ye night, ocasioning yr. wives and some others to go out to them."
" Joesph Fowler, Thomas Scott, John Kemball and Thomas Kemball for their presentment, had a legal admonition."[1]

He married Mary Smith, daughter of Thomas and Joanna Smith. In 1660, he removed to Rowley, where he was constable in 1668. Until his death, he always held some town office, being a selectman. He was killed by Indians, May 3, 1676, at Bradford, and his wife and five children were carried forty miles into the wilderness and were held there until June 13th, when they were returned.

In Nov. 1680 (or 1686), Thomas Smith of Ipswich and his wife Joanna, came to Bradford to live with their widowed daughter, Mary Kimball; as mention is made of Thomas alone the following year, Joanna had probably died.[2]

He died 03 MAY 1676 in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts. Genealogical Dictionary states:

"Kimball, Thomas, Ipswich, s. of Richard, an early sett. of that pt. of Rowley, that aft. was call. Bradford, k. by the Ind. 3 May 1676, when his w. and five ch. Joanna, Thomas, Joseph, Priscilla, and John, were tak. prison. carr. a. forty miles into the wilderness, and allow. to come home 13 June foll."[3]

The Bradford records state that Thomas was “shot by an Indian, and his wife and 5 children, viz. Joannah, Thomas, Joseph, Priscilla & John, were carried captive, they returned home ye 13th of June, 1676”. Mary petitioned the Governor and Council that she might be protected from Symon who had threatened to kill her and her children if they returned to their home. The three Indians were captured, however, they escaped and continued their attacks on the English settlements.

Administration of his estate was granted to Mary on 27 June 1676 and the inventory of his estate was taken 18 May 1676:

On 18 Nov. 1686 “Richard and Benjamin Kimball of Bradford did covenant to and with the Selectmen of Ipswich that they would take Thomas Smith and his wife to Bradford to the house of Mary Kimball the widow of Thomas Kimball and provide their Meate, drink, washing, lodgeing, clothes and attendance with all things necessary for persons in such a condition for the space of one year beginning at the date hereof, the price for a year to be £25”. [5]

Research Notes

Identity of Son Joseph

The identity of his son Joseph is disputed and controversial. Some believe him to be the Joseph Kimball of Surry, Virginia, claiming that the Massachusetts man became a sailor and then "jumped ship" at Virginia en route to or from Barbados.[6] But there is no evidence that Joseph, son of Thomas and Mary, ever left Massachusetts.[7] What we do know about him: "Joseph Kimball of Bradford, bound himself with consent of his mother Mary Kimball for three years to Zacheus Curtis of Boxford, carpenters, December 20, 1687. He was 17 years old when he went and his brother Richard, aged 32 and Thomas 27, testified March 29, 1692 that he was not 21 years and above five months old. He was pressed into His Majesties Service when in Boxford, May 24, 1690, and was not released till November 17th, and the year before he was pressed a fortnight." (Judicial Records, 52, 68).[8].

The claim that a Joseph from Massachusetts went to Barbados and thence to Virginia appears to be an error based on a partial excerpt of a paper written by M.J. Chandler in "The Journal of Barbados Museum and Historical Society" that was posted from the book by Jim White.[9] Reading the full paper, one finds it refers to a passenger list of indentured servants bound from London, probably thru Barbados, bound for Virginia. That occurrence was ca. 1682-84, so it could not have been Joseph, son of Thomas who was only about 12 - 13 yo at the time and still in New England. (M&S' stated birth date for Thomas' son is probably in error and in direct conflict with two other references they make for him in his profile. Calculating from the other facts, he was probably born ca. 1670 - 71 rather than 1662.)

There is no written evidence that any of these Josephs was the one with the meager probate in Virginia in 1713 (Joseph-241), and the purported progenitor of the Southern Kimballs. There are multiple possibilities for the origin of Joseph-241, none of them proven (yet). Also, while there appears to be family lore about Joseph-241 possibly having an Indian wife, there is no known document confirming this either.

Text from Bradford, Massachusetts Vital Records: "Bradford Deaths: Thomas, "shot by an Indian, and his wife and 5 children viz. Joannah, Thomas, Joseph, Priscilla & John, were carried captive, they returned home ye 13th of June, 1676," May 3, 1673."

Kimball-1051 and Kimball-59 appear to represent the same person because: Kimball-1051 is a stub containing only a birth and death date and only unreliable secondary sources. The death date agrees with the death date and place of Kimball-59. The birth date is wrong and is that of Henry Kimball, brother of Kimball-59. The stub should be merged away into Kimball-59 minus the erroneous birth date.

This person immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

Please feel free to improve the profile(s) by providing additional information and reliable sources. The Joseph Kimball,Child of Thomas, Is the Joseph Kimball that married Elizabeth Needham. This Joseph is also the one that went to Barbadoes. I have sources for this . Shouldn't he be added to the childrens list? If so ,can I add him?
posted by Teresa Davis
Teresa, please share your sources. Also please read the description of Joseph under the list of children, above, in the narrative. It looks pretty clear that Joseph of Massachusetts was a different man than Joseph of Barbados. If you have sources that indicate otherwise, please share in a comment here.

Thank you. You are most correct, and my genealogy research has come to a screeching halt because I cannot find the correct Joseph in my paternal lineage. So, yes to Teresa, please share your sources. I would gladly pay $ if the sources pan out.

It appears there were three (?) Joseph Kimballs:

1. Joseph Kimball (no wikitre profile), son of THOMAS Kimball and Mary Smith; born about 1675 based on his age in 1692; d aft 1692 (last record?) . We have no profile for him yet, and beyond the records referring to him above (in the list of children), we have no evidence he married or had issue. Not sure how we can distinguish him from #3 below, who also had a mother Mary.

2. Joseph Kimball-241, b abt 1660 who emigrated directly from England to Virginia, and supposedly married about 1697 Virginia Rebecca Shearin (still lacking a source for this), and had several children: Charles, Joseph, Peter, William, Benjamin. This Joseph died 14 Apr 1713 in Virginia.

3. Joseph Kimball-4054, b 20 Jan 1661 in Wenham, MA, son of HENRY Kimball and Mary Riddlesdale. Supposedly married Elizabeth Needham. Profile indicates he died in Massachusetts in 1713. Children: One son, another Joseph; one daughter Mary. No sources for any of it, unfortunately.

In my own recent research on Joseph Kimball, I agree that there may have been three different ones whose records are intertwined. The one in Virginia is in my own lineage. Just trying to figure out his linkage backwards. But back to Teresa's question In this record of Thomas Kimball I, although there's no profile on son Joseph available, there is in its place in the list of Children the interesting (possibly erroneous) narrative of the one who was supposedly impressed into sea duty and wound up in VA. However, Joseph is not correspondingly listed in the Descendants list at the top. It is clear that this Thomas (killed by Indians) had a son Joseph as reflected in the cited Bradford records about the Indian attack. For completeness, shouldn't Joseph be listed as a Descendant as a plain text entry as he is in the Children's list below? (BTW, Teresa never did get back with the documentation on the Joseph who married Elizabeth Needham. Perhaps she has included it in the VA Joseph Kimball profile?)

Larry, if you would like to create a new profile for Joseph, son of Thomas Kimball and Mary Smith, by all means, feel free to do so. However, we would need to find a project to protect it-- Massachusetts, perhaps-- to prevent him from being associated with any wife, children, or any Virginia death. There is no evidence of him after he testified March 29, 1692 that he was not yet 21. That appears to be the last record of him.

He did not go to Barbados; he did not jump ship in Virginia. The Virginia Joseph Kimball came to Virginia from *England.*

I have found no evidence to support the Elizabeth Needham story for the other Joseph Kimball (son of Henry, I believe).

I am 72 years old and my genealogy research has come to a screeching halt because I cannot connect to the correct Joseph Kimball. Your sources would be most valuable to many of us if they pan out. Please, I am begging you, share your sources. In my copy of the HISTORY OF THE KIMBALL FAMILY IN AMERICA FROM 1634 TO 1897..... the Joseph Kimball who married Elizabeth Needham was the son of Henry Kimball and not Thomas Kimball. Found on page 49 of the book, assigned ahnantafel #11. I am not saying this book is perfect, because I have found one small error in it. I am saying that this is what Morrison and Sharples recorded in their book. I have come across a free site where the book can be found. I have printed pages of the book off that site. And, page 49-50 can be copied.

Just for completeness in addition to my comment on Joseph, son of Thomas below, the Joseph who married Elizabeth Needham was his cousin. That later Joseph is referred to as a Mariner in Morrison & Sharples. He was the son of Thomas' brother Henry (M&S, p. 49).

Some researchers keep saying that a Joseph from Massachusetts went to Barbados and thence to Virginia. That too appears to be in error and based on reading a partial excerpt of a paper written by M.J. Chandler in "The Journal of Barbados Museum and Historical Society" that was posted from the book by Jim White. Reading the full paper, one finds it refers to a passenger list of indentured servants bound from London, probably thru Barbados, bound for Virginia. That occurrence was ca. 1682-84, so it could not have been Joseph, son of Thomas who was only about 12 - 13 yo at the time and still in New England. (M&S' stated birth date for Thomas' son is probably in error and in direct conflict with two other references they make for him in his profile. There is no written evidence that any of these Josephs was the one with the meager probate in Virginia in 1713 (Joseph-241), and the purported progenitor of the Southern Kimballs. There are multiple possibilities for the origin of Joseph-241, none of them proven (yet). Also, while there appears to be statements and family lore about Joseph-241 possibly having an Indian wife, I have yet to find any written documentation to that effect.

Accordingly, I have removed the bold-faced comment that was in the Biography above saying the passenger list had been found and the Virginia Joseph was from London. True, a Joseph Kimball probably came from London bound for Virginia, but we have no written documentation that he actually arrived in Virginia or that he is Joseph-241.

Actually I cannot edit the profile because I haven't made 50 contributions yet. Perhaps the Profile Manager will remove that misleading bold-faced comment in the Biography. Please.

Under Children, Nos. 2 and 4, Joanna and Hannah, may be the same person. There is a birth record for Hannah, 21 Jan 1660/1 at Ipswich (Vital Records of Ipswich MA, http://ma-vitalrecords.org).
posted by Robert Dorn
It appears that at some point, someone added Hannah daughter of Benjamin Kimball and Mercy Hazeltine to this Thomas ' list of children, and included the wrong birth record of Benjamin's daughter. She is connected to the correct parents.

KIMBAL, Anna, d. Benjamin and Mary [Mercy. CTR], 22: 10m: 1661 born at Salisbury.

She just needs to be removed from Thomas' bio section as she is not actually attached as a child.
